Wired vs Wireless Home Alarm Systems: Which Is Better?
Choosing a home alarm in Perth usually comes down to three setups: fully wired, fully wireless, or a hybrid. Watchdog Alarms Pty Ltd (Master Licence SA12449) installs all three. The right choice depends on the building, whether you rent or own, and whether you want the system to keep working when the NBN or power drops.
Wireless alarm systems
Wireless systems (including Qolsys IQ Panel 4 and Alarm.com) are the most common install in Perth homes now. Sensors talk to the panel over a secure radio link, so there is no cable run around door frames and no chasing plaster.
They suit: established homes where you do not want walls opened; renters who may take the system to the next property; faster installs and neater finishes; pet-friendly sensors and app control from day one.
A proper wireless install still needs a licensed technician. Cheap DIY kits skip cellular backup, professional monitoring options, and the WA licensing that insurers look for.
Wired alarm systems
Hardwired systems are still the better fit for some properties: new builds, large homes being renovated, and sites that already have a working cable run. Each detector has a dedicated cable back to the panel, so they are less dependent on batteries and radio range.
They suit: new construction and pre-wire; long cable runs or thick walls that can block wireless; businesses that already have a wired panel worth keeping.
The trade-off is install time and disruption if the house is finished.
Hybrid systems
Many Perth jobs are hybrid: keep a sound wired backbone, add wireless sensors where cabling is painful, and put the whole lot on Alarm.com so you get app control, video, and optional 24/7 Grade A1 monitoring. This is often the cheapest way to modernise an inherited or beeping older alarm instead of ripping it out.
What we actually recommend
For most homes we start with wireless or hybrid, cellular backup, and a choice of self-monitoring or Grade A1 monitoring. Packages from $1,599*. No lock-in contract.
If you already have a panel on the wall, we can usually tell you on a site visit whether to keep it, upgrade it, or replace it. That is often cheaper than a full rip-out.
